Considerations in Rescue Dog Training

May 19, 2010 By: Category: Rescue Dog Training

Training for a rescue dog is most likely similar in training a regular dog but you have to take some special considerations. It may depend on the rescue center where you obtained the dog and perhaps its age. Below are pointers that you might consider in rescue dog training:

* Dogs that came from rescue centers or shelter homes might be having training issues. What you would first normally do before starting to train these newly adopted dogs is to restrict their bad habits. It is good to detrain them from jumping on other people, counter surfing, animal chasing, disturbing barks and other bad habits as these are all easily correctable.

* Rescue dog training would often times involve providing them with stuffs that they failed to get an early age (when they are puppies). Like if a dog has not been well socialized before with his surroundings, you could start to make some efforts like strolling it in parks. This should not be a restraint in the puppy adoption plan but it serves as a reminder.

* It is hard to teach an old dog some tricks. Although some old dogs have less interest to learn, they can still be trained. If you have an old rescue dog to train, you better have more patience on it as most often times they have already learned habits and are comfortable with their own ways.

* It is suggested that you do some basics in training rescue dogs like housetraining. It is treating an old dog that has never been housebroken like it’s a puppy. Teaching it with the first lessons they should learn

* Often times, you wouldn’t know much information on an adopted dog from animal control centers and you need to figure it out yourself about its behavior. You may give an extra time to observe the dog while on training. Just to decipher on what it wants and what it dislikes.

* Just like people, the way to know more of a person is to bond.  For rescue dogs, it is good that it can trust you and is bonded to you. You can then move to the next level of training once you see progress in it.

* It will be hard to determine behavioral issues about the newly adopted dog as you have to decipher it for quite some time. So you might work through it a slower pace just to get everything set. Aggression may not work for a newly adopted rescue dog.

* Training rescue dogs would be set to make them feel secure in their new home. They may experience a kind of condition called separation anxiety so this is one thing that you need to further look.

Many say it is rewarding or good luck if you adopt a dog from a shelter house or rescue center because it will repay you tenfold for the adoption. It should not be a restraint adopting a rescue dog of any age as it can be trained. What you need to do is love them like how you treat your pets at home. There are just considerations to keep as these are dogs with special stories.
